Because of the essentiality of water in sustaining life, the increasing demand for it due to global population growth is more important than ever to find ways to have clean water, including sanitation. The same is accurate, and the rate at which pollution and consumption make usable water scarcer. Having a clean water supply helps humanity secure a sustainable supply of drinking water; for now, it guarantees that our children and grandchildren will have the means to the water they will need to survive.

Thankfully, many governments, non-profit, and even business organizations worldwide are working to raise awareness about this critical issue. Today, I honor a few of these entities by making a list of organizations that have made significant contributions to clean water and sanitation efforts, such as raising awareness, creating new standards for water efficiency, or making sizable DIY in gaining clean water. And while I wish I could recognize every organization that has contributed to clean water and sanitation efforts, there are far too many influential organizations to fit into one blog post. So, here is my list of top organizations worthy of respect for their efforts to address the world’s water issues. This list is in any order.

Clean Water International. Clean Water International’s vision is a world where children can reach their potential because they have access to essential water, sanitation, and hygiene. Starting with a safe, clean glass of water. And part of their mission is to provide water, sanitation, and hygiene (WaSH) education and technology solutions. Clean Water International believes that certain conditions need to be in place for transformation to happen. These are active communities, strong leadership, equality, focus on sustainability, and partnerships between development sectors.

Moreover, Clean Water International has lined up solid clean water and sanitation programs. These programs are geared toward households and schools, including designing and constructing handwashing stations, constructing wells and rainwater tanks, building toilets, and deploying emergency water filtrations. They also have stewardship programs that tackle responsible planning and management of resources and wash education.

Clean Water Fund. Early on in 1974, the Clean Water Fund has worked to promote advocacy of clean, safe water and air and a reduction in pollution in the home, workplace, and community. Their programs are designed to build on and complement those of Clean Water Action. This has helped develop, pass, strengthen and defend the [American] nation’s primary water and toxins laws (e.g., Safe Drinking Water Act, Superfund, Clean Water Act, and others).

PepsiCo. PepsiCo has also significantly reduced its water consumption in an industry reliant upon water resources. However, they are not the only company to enact water conservation efforts. PepsiCo’s conservation efforts earned them a Stockholm Industry Water Prize in 2012.

The heart of PepsiCo’s global water strategy is access to safe water. They aim to enable long-term, sustainable water security for our business and others who depend on water availability. The company has funded over 40 million dollars in safe water access solutions with strategic partners to support a total of 25 million people with safe water access by 2025.

The Water Project. The Water Project is an organization helping communities in sub-Saharan Africa have access to clean drinking water. By helping communities to dig dams, wells, build rain-catching equipment, filter surface water, and improve sanitation & hygiene practices, the Water Project helps to improve the quality of life for these communities.

World Resources Institute. The World Resources Institute (WRI) works to protect the climate, establish clean power systems, reduce the impact of food industries on the environment, prevent deforestation, create a water-secure future, and improve the quality of life in cities.

While they work on various environmental and humanitarian issues, their work on creating water risk maps will help others better plan water conservation and distribution efforts to minimize water shortages in the future.

As I mentioned earlier, many organizations deserve mention for their efforts to address the world’s water issues. While I cannot cover them all here, even in brief as I have done for the ones in this list, I hope that these examples will inspire you to find ways to help secure clean water and sanitation of your own accord.
